Use of an Interactive Metronome. �

The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of a computer mediated Interactive Metronome � (IM) sound-feedback system on the timing and motor coordination development of 6-12 year old special education students in a midwestern school district. This device was originally developed to help musicians learn tempo and was later discovered that it might help children with motor and coordination problems. This is a pilot test of this device under controlled conditions.
Results
The analysis of the sub�tests by use of a Multivariate Analysis of Variance of the mean gain scores on the Bruininks-Oseretsky Test for the Metronome Group (IM) and the Control Group, presented in Table 1, shows a significant overall difference between the groups (Hottelling's Test, F = 2.186, p =.005). It appears that the Interactive Metronome � was effective in improving visual motor control and coordination.
�The first controlled study of the Interactive Metronome system appears to demonstrate effectiveness in improving fine and visual motor coordination of special education students. While more studies are needed to verify this effect, what is remarkable and promising about this initial research was that improvements were shown in a very short treatment period of between 6 and 8 weeks. Since there are a number of variables to be tested and a variety of variation on treatment methods, the initial study of the Interactive Metronome shows a great deal of promise for helping special education students improve visual motor and fine motor coordination. Longer and more varied treatment regimes may demonstrate other potential benefits including effects on overall motor functioning and cognitive development.�
