Rhonda Rowland, Your Health reporter
Ryan Loeffler, age 8, ADHD reported by his mother, after IM training, to be a different child, his teachers could not believe he was the same child.
Jimmy Eggleston was IM trained as part of piano lessons but his improvement in many areas unrelated was so significant, in areas of gross and fine motor and academics, it prompted additional research which led to the publication.
Rowland said, the IM training appears to develop an enhanced ability to plan and sequence. The peer reviewed IM research was published in the American Journal of Occupational Therapy described by Dr. Stanley Greenspan, a co-author, as indicating benefits to ADHD patients, including:
· Improved attention
· Improved motor planning and sequencing
· Improvement in selected academic skills reading, math
Rebecca Fewell, Miami, FL said, let the researchers provide us a little more evidence before it is introduced to children.
Ms. Rowland reported over 300 Hospitals and clinics provide the IM training. Each trainer must complete 15 hours of training themselves. The IM, she said, does not replace but is a compliment to existing therapies.
CBS Early Show
HealthWatch feature on the Interactive Metronome® described as a unique drug free treatment that has shown great promise in kids with Attention Deficit Disorder. [Note: the IM is an intervention, which is a compliment to conventional treatments.] http://www.interactivemetronome.com/
Emily Senay, MD, Medical Editor, CBS HealthWatch
Case Study : David Singer, age 12, Thornwood, NY, ADHD
David was described by his Special Education teacher, Christina Liga, before IM training as needing a personal secretary. After the IM, David was more organized, shows less and less ADHD symptoms.
Michael Novick, Pediatric Occupational Therapist, Bronxville, NY, and IM training provider to David who he described as improving in mental abilities through the IM training including improved organization, concentration and language skills. Christina Liga reported that since IM training, David has become a mentor and model to other Special Education students.
Dr. Senay explained that the IM strengthens mind muscle connections. Once those connections are improved, it allows them [IM trained] to plan better and be better organized. Dr. Senay advised to use it [IM training] in addition to conventional therapies; this might be a good thing to try.
